You can normally expect two types of response from Burmese Buddhists
when they are criticized for being who they are in relation to
anti-Muslim violence. One is of denial: “This is not my Buddhism!”
('I-am-proud-of-nothing' attitude). Another is the
desire to be recognized as a religion struggling to find its rightful
place among majority populations in the modern state. Buddhists are not
stupid to worship any bald man wearing
saffron robes, and yet they certainly abhor Western disrespect and
ignorance of their faith and self-perception. Those in the first
category may be liberal darlings of tolerance (in the image of the
West’s own) but it is the understanding of the second that matters for
societal harmony.
